Ride-the-Wave Strategy – Best for Stock Traders

Ride-the-Wave targets multi-day price momentum following a company’s earnings announcement (EA). With this strategy:

  1. Buy a stock one day post-EA if a stock reacts positively post-earnings:
    1. Near the close of trading the EA-day for a pre-market-EA
    2. Near the close of the following day for a post-market-EA
  2. Sell-to-close after 7-10 days, or possibly earlier if a desired price target is reached

Similarly,

  1. short a stock one day post-EA if a stock reacts negatively post-earnings:
    1. near the close of trading the EA-day for a premarket-EA
    2. near the close of the following day for a post-market-EA
  2. then buy-to-close after 7-10 days, or possibly earlier if a desired price target is reached

Important: Ride-the-Wave is predicated on significant price momentum triggered by an EA. The 7-10 day scenario is the maximum trade hold-time. If you see post EA-momentum is halted or reversed by a significant opposite move, re-evaluate your presence in the trade.

This popular StockEarnings screen below will give you a list of stocks that historically exhibit significant price momentum following an EA for the next seven days:

  1. Stocks exhibiting positive post-EA price moves are buy-candidates
  2. Stocks exhibiting negative post-EA price moves are sell/short-candidates

The screen includes those stocks whose Earnings just came out in last two days.

Screen criteria:

  1. Earnings Date Start Date : Current Date + -1 Day
  2. Earnings Date End Date : Current Date + -2 Days
  3. Predicted Move (Next Day) Max : 7%
  4. Predicted Move (On 7th Day) Min : 7%

Strategy Guideline:

  1. Buy the stock if stock has reacted positively. Short the stock if stock has reacted negatively (see above).
  2. Close the position in 7-10 days, or possibly earlier based on price move.

Volatility Crush Strategy - Best for Options Traders

The Volatility Crush strategy is used with stocks that typically experience relatively low-to-moderate price moves (≤4%) following their Earnings Announcements (EA). The basic trade idea is to sell put or call options right before the EA, collecting a credit when options premium is very high due to elevated implied volatility (IV). You then close the position right after the EA by buying the option back much cheaper due to the significant drop in IV that occurs after the mystery of the EA disappears. In assessing this trade, you need to do your homework to ensure you collect sufficient premium to make the trade worthwhile.

This trade is practical due to the low-to-moderate price-move after the EA, which generally won’t significantly affect the options price, unlike an “action” stock, which experience great price moves post-EA. With these symbols, if you’re on the right side of the price move, that’s a great thing. But if you’re on the wrong side of the move, not so great. Consequently, by minimizing the effect of the post-EA price move, you have a much better chance to profit from the reduction in IV without it being ruined by a violent price move.

For this trade, open the position either (1) the night before the EA when the company announces earnings or (2) during the EA day when it announces post-market, generally capturing IV at or close to its peak.

Volatility Rush Strategy - Best for Options Traders

The Volatility Rush takes advantage of increasing options premiums into earnings announcements (EA) caused by an anticipated rise in Implied Volatility (IV). With this strategy, Buy a Call and Put at-the-money (a long straddle) 2-3 weeks before the EA when IV is lower. Sell the position either (1) the night before the EA when the company announces earnings pre-market, or (2) during the EA day when it announces post-market, generally capturing IV at or close to its peak.

This popular screen will give you a list of stocks whose Options premiums tend to rise into Earnings. It includes only those stocks whose Earnings are at least two weeks away from today.

Screen criteria:

  1. Earnings Date Start Date : Current Date + 15 Days
  2. Earnings Date End Date : Current Date + 30 Days
  3. Predicted Move (Next Day) Min : 5%
  4. Options Type: Weekly or Monthly if that lines up with the two to three-week lead-time for entering the trade

Strategy Guideline:

  1. Buy a Straddle at or close to the money two to three weeks pre-EA.
  2. Sell the position either the night before the EA when the company announces earnings pre-market, or during the EA day when it announces post-market.
  3. Expiration date should generally be the closest expiry immediately after the EA.
  4. Straddle price should not be more 60% of predicted move.

Procter & Gamble Beats Q1 Expectations as Shoppers Buy More

Procter & Gamble Beats Q1 Expectations as Shoppers Buy More

Procter & Gamble (NYSE: PG) gave investors something to feel better about. Its shoppers are buying more of its products again. The company behind Tide, Febreze and Gillette reported fiscal first-quarter earnings and revenue that topped Wall Street’s expectations.

Adjusted earnings reached $2 per share, beating expectations of $1.88. Revenue climbed 4% to $23.3 billion, ahead of the $22.8 billion analysts anticipated. Those numbers offered an encouraging start to fiscal 2027.

“Our solid sales, earnings and cash results in the first quarter reflect sharpened execution of our integrated strategy,” said Shailesh Jejurikar, Chairman of the Board, President and CEO, as quoted in the earnings press release.

“While we expect there will continue to be geopolitical and economic challenges, this strong start keeps us on track to deliver within our guidance ranges for organic sales growth, core EPS growth and free cash flow productivity for the fiscal year. We remain committed to our strategy to delight consumers with superior products at a superior value by putting the consumer first in everything we do. We are confident in the near term and excited about the future.”

But the more interesting development was what happened behind those results. After a difficult stretch with cautious consumers, Procter & Gamble sold more products. For investors wondering whether its familiar household brands still have room to grow, that matters.

P&G Earnings Show Consumers Are Buying More Products

Consumers have been watching their spending closely, even when buying everyday necessities. Procter & Gamble executives previously described shoppers stretching out their supplies of shampoo and detergent while showing greater interest in larger packages that offer better value.

That behavior creates a challenge. People still need to wash their clothes and brush their teeth, but they can delay purchases, choose cheaper alternatives, or wait for promotions. The latest results suggest P&G is making progress with those shoppers. However, one strong quarter does not establish a lasting recovery. Investors will want to see whether the company can keep sales volumes moving higher throughout the year.

Tide and Febreze Drive P&G’s Stronger Sales Volumes

Procter & Gamble’s fabric and home care business delivered the strongest volume performance, with growth of 4.3%. The division includes well-known brands such as Tide and Febreze.

That is encouraging because it shows strength in products consumers use regularly. When shoppers continue choosing those brands despite tight budgets, it gives investors a reason to feel more confident about demand.

The improvement also extended beyond laundry and household cleaning. Both the beauty business and the baby, feminine and family care division reported volume growth above 2%. Having several divisions contribute makes the quarter more reassuring than a result driven by one standout product category.

Still, there were weak spots. Volume in the grooming business, which includes Gillette and Venus, slipped 0.4%. The health care division had a tougher quarter, with volume falling 2.9% as demand weakened for oral care and personal health products.

Revenue Growth Outpaces Net Income as Profit Pressures Persist

Procter & Gamble reported net income attributable to the company of $4.73 billion, slightly below the $4.75 billion earned a year earlier. Reported earnings per share nevertheless increased to $1.97 from $1.95. After excluding restructuring expenses and other items, adjusted earnings were $2 per share. In short, Procter & Gamble performed better than analysts expected, but its higher sales did not translate into higher overall net income. The next few quarters should help show whether stronger demand can produce better profit growth.

The company maintained its fiscal 2027 outlook for core earnings of $6.89 to $7.11 per share. It also raised its forecast for total sales growth to between 2% and 4%, compared with its earlier expectation of 1% to 3%.

P&G Stock Outlook: Can Stronger Sales Drive Profit Growth?

Procter & Gamble’s quarter gives shareholders a reason to feel more optimistic. Shoppers are buying more of its household products, and growth across several divisions suggests the improvement has some breadth.

Still, the company needs to turn stronger demand into higher total profit. From here, the key is whether Procter & Gamble can keep customers coming back while improving earnings. Another quarter of progress would make a stronger case that this recovery has staying power.
