Bitcoin (BTC) last traded at $71,956 and could push even higher. All on hopes the U.S. will create clearer rules for cryptocurrencies. Fueling upside, President Donald Trump met with top cryptocurrency executives at the White House.
During the meeting, Trump pushed Congress to move forward with the CLARITY Act, a bill that would create new rules for the crypto industry.
Why the CLARITY Act Matters
For years, cryptocurrency companies have complained that U.S. rules are confusing and difficult to follow. One of the biggest questions is whether a particular cryptocurrency should be treated as a security or a commodity. That distinction matters because different government agencies regulate each type of asset.
The CLARITY Act is designed to make those rules clearer. Under the proposed law, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, or CFTC, would have a larger role in overseeing certain parts of the crypto market. The Securities and Exchange Commission, or SEC, would continue to regulate cryptocurrencies that are considered securities. Supporters of the bill say clearer rules would make it easier for companies to operate in the United States.
They also believe the legislation could encourage more investment and help the U.S. compete with other countries in the growing digital-asset industry.
Trump and Crypto Executives Push Congress
Trump has made cryptocurrency a major part of his economic agenda.
At the White House meeting, he was joined by government officials and executives from some of the biggest names in finance and cryptocurrency. Companies represented included Coinbase, Ripple, Gemini, Nasdaq (NASDAQ: NDAQ), the New York Stock Exchange and CME Group (NASDAQ: CME). Many of these companies have spent years asking lawmakers to provide clearer rules for the industry.
Coinbase (NASDAQ: COIN) CEO Brian Armstrong has been one of the most vocal supporters of the legislation. The crypto industry argues that companies need predictable rules instead of having to guess how regulators will treat different digital assets.
The House of Representatives already passed its version of the CLARITY Act in 2025. However, the bill has faced problems in the Senate. Now, crypto executives are hoping lawmakers can reach an agreement before the Senate’s September recess.
Not Everyone Supports the Bill
While the cryptocurrency industry strongly supports the CLARITY Act, some lawmakers have concerns. One major issue involves Trump’s own connections to cryptocurrency.
Trump and members of his family have business interests in the crypto industry. Critics argue that this creates potential conflicts of interest because the administration is supporting legislation that could benefit the broader cryptocurrency market. Democrats have also raised concerns about investor protection and other parts of the proposed legislation.
This means that passing the bill will not be easy. Lawmakers still have to agree on several important issues before it can become law.
What’s Next for the CLARITY Act and Bitcoin?
The biggest question now is whether Congress can actually pass the CLARITY Act.
If lawmakers make progress, cryptocurrency investors could see it as a major step toward making digital assets a more accepted part of the U.S. financial system.
Clearer rules could also make it easier for banks, investment firms and other large companies to get involved in cryptocurrency. But if Congress fails to reach an agreement, some of the excitement could disappear.
For Bitcoin investors, the latest rally is therefore about more than just the price of Bitcoin. It is also a bet that the U.S. government is getting closer to creating a clearer and more predictable system for cryptocurrency.
Moving forward, the coming weeks could be important. If Trump and the crypto industry can convince lawmakers to move the CLARITY Act forward, Bitcoin and the wider cryptocurrency market could receive another boost.
