The stock market has already gotten off to a strong start in August, and one of Wall Street’s most well-known market bulls believes the rally may just be getting started.
Tom Lee, head of research at Fundstrat Capital, is predicting another big move higher for stocks this month. In a video sent to clients, Lee said he believes the S&P 500 could climb to between 7,900 and 8,000 before the end of August.
Why Lee Thinks Stocks Can Keep Climbing
According to Lee, the market has spent the past two months building a solid foundation before making its next move higher. “The market had been consolidating for the last eight to 10 weeks,” Lee said, as quoted by CNBC “The bigger the base, the bigger the breakout.”
Rather than seeing recent sideways trading as a warning sign, he views it as a setup for another breakout that could push the S&P 500 (SPW) to fresh record highs.
Helping, the market is still gaining momentum in August. The S&P 500 has already risen about 3.1% during the first week of the month, reaching new all-time highs. Investors have been encouraged by another round of stronger-than-expected corporate earnings, along with growing optimism that geopolitical tensions could begin to ease.
One area that investors are watching closely is the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route for global oil supplies. Hopes that a deal could reopen the waterway and restore normal oil traffic have helped improve overall market sentiment, reducing concerns about energy prices and inflation. Combined with solid earnings reports, that has given investors another reason to buy.
Earnings Continue to Surprise
Another reason Lee remains optimistic is the strength of corporate earnings. Second-quarter earnings season has generally been better than expected, with many companies reporting stronger sales, higher profits, and upbeat outlooks for the remainder of the year.
More encouraging, Lee said analysts are beginning to raise their earnings forecasts for 2027, suggesting Wall Street expects profit growth to continue well beyond this year. “Earnings are indeed accelerating,” Lee added.
The Bottom Line
Tom Lee remains one of Wall Street’s most optimistic strategists, and he believes the current rally still has room to run. His target of 7,900 to 8,000 for the S&P 500 would mark another milestone for a market that has already reached record highs this month.
His bullish outlook is based on several factors, including improving corporate earnings, strong technical indicators, continued leadership from technology stocks, and optimism that geopolitical risks could ease. While no market forecast is guaranteed to be correct, Lee believes the combination of accelerating earnings growth, healthy market momentum, and improving investor confidence could help drive stocks even higher before August comes to an end.
