Ride-the-Wave Strategy – Best for Stock Traders

Ride-the-Wave targets multi-day price momentum following a company’s earnings announcement (EA). With this strategy:

  1. Buy a stock one day post-EA if a stock reacts positively post-earnings:
    1. Near the close of trading the EA-day for a pre-market-EA
    2. Near the close of the following day for a post-market-EA
  2. Sell-to-close after 7-10 days, or possibly earlier if a desired price target is reached

Similarly,

  1. short a stock one day post-EA if a stock reacts negatively post-earnings:
    1. near the close of trading the EA-day for a premarket-EA
    2. near the close of the following day for a post-market-EA
  2. then buy-to-close after 7-10 days, or possibly earlier if a desired price target is reached

Important: Ride-the-Wave is predicated on significant price momentum triggered by an EA. The 7-10 day scenario is the maximum trade hold-time. If you see post EA-momentum is halted or reversed by a significant opposite move, re-evaluate your presence in the trade.

This popular StockEarnings screen below will give you a list of stocks that historically exhibit significant price momentum following an EA for the next seven days:

  1. Stocks exhibiting positive post-EA price moves are buy-candidates
  2. Stocks exhibiting negative post-EA price moves are sell/short-candidates

The screen includes those stocks whose Earnings just came out in last two days.

Screen criteria:

  1. Earnings Date Start Date : Current Date + -1 Day
  2. Earnings Date End Date : Current Date + -2 Days
  3. Predicted Move (Next Day) Max : 7%
  4. Predicted Move (On 7th Day) Min : 7%

Strategy Guideline:

  1. Buy the stock if stock has reacted positively. Short the stock if stock has reacted negatively (see above).
  2. Close the position in 7-10 days, or possibly earlier based on price move.

Volatility Crush Strategy - Best for Options Traders

The Volatility Crush strategy is used with stocks that typically experience relatively low-to-moderate price moves (≤4%) following their Earnings Announcements (EA). The basic trade idea is to sell put or call options right before the EA, collecting a credit when options premium is very high due to elevated implied volatility (IV). You then close the position right after the EA by buying the option back much cheaper due to the significant drop in IV that occurs after the mystery of the EA disappears. In assessing this trade, you need to do your homework to ensure you collect sufficient premium to make the trade worthwhile.

This trade is practical due to the low-to-moderate price-move after the EA, which generally won’t significantly affect the options price, unlike an “action” stock, which experience great price moves post-EA. With these symbols, if you’re on the right side of the price move, that’s a great thing. But if you’re on the wrong side of the move, not so great. Consequently, by minimizing the effect of the post-EA price move, you have a much better chance to profit from the reduction in IV without it being ruined by a violent price move.

For this trade, open the position either (1) the night before the EA when the company announces earnings or (2) during the EA day when it announces post-market, generally capturing IV at or close to its peak.

Volatility Rush Strategy - Best for Options Traders

The Volatility Rush takes advantage of increasing options premiums into earnings announcements (EA) caused by an anticipated rise in Implied Volatility (IV). With this strategy, Buy a Call and Put at-the-money (a long straddle) 2-3 weeks before the EA when IV is lower. Sell the position either (1) the night before the EA when the company announces earnings pre-market, or (2) during the EA day when it announces post-market, generally capturing IV at or close to its peak.

This popular screen will give you a list of stocks whose Options premiums tend to rise into Earnings. It includes only those stocks whose Earnings are at least two weeks away from today.

Screen criteria:

  1. Earnings Date Start Date : Current Date + 15 Days
  2. Earnings Date End Date : Current Date + 30 Days
  3. Predicted Move (Next Day) Min : 5%
  4. Options Type: Weekly or Monthly if that lines up with the two to three-week lead-time for entering the trade

Strategy Guideline:

  1. Buy a Straddle at or close to the money two to three weeks pre-EA.
  2. Sell the position either the night before the EA when the company announces earnings pre-market, or during the EA day when it announces post-market.
  3. Expiration date should generally be the closest expiry immediately after the EA.
  4. Straddle price should not be more 60% of predicted move.

Verizon Q3 Earnings Beat: Is the Turnaround Finally Taking Hold?

Verizon Q3 Earnings Beat: Is the Turnaround Finally Taking Hold?

Verizon (NYSE: VZ) gave investors a reason to feel better about its business. The telecommunications company beat Wall Street’s third-quarter earnings expectations, raised its full-year outlook, and delivered a sharp improvement in customer growth.

For investors, the appeal goes beyond one beat. Verizon needs to show it can attract customers while keeping the business profitable. Selling more service through expensive promotions can help subscriber numbers, but it does not necessarily leave shareholders better off. This quarter offered encouraging evidence that the company is making progress on both fronts. Still, a revenue miss shows there is room for improvement.

Earnings Beat Expectations, but Revenue Falls Short

Verizon reported adjusted earnings of $1.31 per share, topping analysts’ expectations of $1.27. Revenue reached $34.31 billion, below the $34.77 billion Wall Street anticipated.

That makes this a mixed report at the top line, even with the stronger profit performance. Investors should distinguish between a company earning more than expected and bringing in more sales than expected. Verizon accomplished the former. Compared with a year earlier, adjusted earnings increased 8.3%, while total revenue rose 1.5%. Equipment revenue fell 9% as customers kept phones longer and the company reduced device subsidies.

Customer Growth Provides a Bigger Surprise

The most encouraging number was Verizon’s addition of 406,000 net postpaid phone subscribers. These are customers who pay for service through a monthly bill.

Analysts expected about195,000 additions. However, Verizon brought in more than twice the number anticipated. That matters because wireless providers compete for customers who can choose among several carriers. Winning an account creates the opportunity to collect recurring payments, sell additional services, and build a longer customer relationship.

But attracting customers is only half the challenge. Keeping them without constantly offering expensive incentives is just as important. Verizon reported lower customer turnover, while its promotional costs for acquiring and retaining customers declined. Mobility and broadband service revenue increased 2.9% to $23.5 billion.

Taken together, those figures suggest the company’s improvement involves more than simply spending heavily to boost subscriber totals. The next test is consistency. A strong quarter gets investors’ attention. Repeating that performance makes a more convincing case that the business has improved.

Verizon now expects full-year adjusted earnings of $5.04 to $5.06 per share, representing growth of 7% to 7.5%. Its previous forecast called for growth of 6% to 7%. Management also raised its forecast for postpaid phone net additions to between 1.1 million and 1.2 million. Free cash flow growth is expected to approach 12%, compared with the previous outlook of 9% to 10%.

An AI Opportunity Adds Interest

Verizon also announced an agreement with Amazon Web Services valued at more than $2 billion, adding another potential growth opportunity alongside its wireless business. Reuters described the agreement as an AI infrastructure deal.

The investor logic is straightforward: AI services need communications infrastructure to move information between computing systems and users. That creates opportunities beyond the companies designing chips or developing software.

Still, an announced agreement should not be treated as immediate quarterly revenue. Investors will need to watch its contribution over time. For now, Verizon’s clearest progress is in its core business. Strong subscriber additions, its earnings beat, and higher guidance provide a firmer foundation for optimism.

The next report will help show whether the company can sustain that momentum through the competitive holiday season. If customer growth continues without sacrificing profitability, investors will have a stronger reason to look beyond the initial stock-price bounce.

Can Verizon Turn Subscriber Growth Into Lasting Profits?

Verizon is giving investors more reasons to be optimistic, but the revenue miss leaves something to prove. The key now is turning new customer relationships into lasting, profitable growth while delivering on its higher earnings and cash flow forecasts. The AWS agreement adds potential, but execution in the everyday wireless business will remain essential. If Verizon can keep customers happy, control promotional spending, and strengthen sales, this quarter could mark meaningful progress toward a more durable recovery.
