Walmart Inc. (NYSE:WMT) is looking to strengthen and affirm its status as the nation's largest grocer. The big-box retailer is in the process of testing a new convenient system that it hopes will enhance grocery deliveries. The new system relies on a smart cooler placed in the customer’s front porch or doorstep.
Walmart Smart Coolers
Walmart is to provide customers with a temperature controlled smart cooler dubbed the Home Valet under the new system. The cooler will allow the retailer to make secure and contact-free grocery deliveries round the clock.
With the new grocery delivery system, Walmart customers will no longer have to plan their day around grocery delivery. Instead, they will be able to go about their normal duties yet have their groceries delivered and kept fresh at the doorstep until pick up.
Enhancing Grocery Deliveries
Walmart is to trial the new system this spring, starting with customers in its hometown of Bentonville, Arkansas. If successful, the pilot program will go a long way in making it easier for Amazon to make grocery deliveries a 24/7 delivery business.
The retail giant has invested heavily as it seeks to strengthen its home delivery business. The investments come amid a significant decline in customer traffic to brick and mortar stores. With shopping patterns switching to online, retailers have been forced to think outside the box in a bid to cling on to customers and strengthen their competitive edge.
Walmart has already trialed a number of delivery options as it seeks to bolster its retail empire. In 2019 it launched InHome, a grocery delivery service that allows it to place fresh fruit meats and other groceries directly in customer’s fridges for $19.95 a month. The downside of the delivery service is that it requires additional security measures such as a smart lock and employees' additional training.
The use of a smart cooler will allow the retailer to deliver and place groceries within customers' reach without having to get inside homes. The smart cooler comes with three zones capable of holding groceries at different temperatures.
