Walmart Inc. (NYSE: WMT) is already looking into the future as it looks to enhance its logistics network. The nation’s largest retailer will start making deliveries as early as next year using fully autonomous box trucks. In partnership with startup Gatik, the two have been trialing the autonomous delivery system over the past 18 months.
Walmart Self-Driving cars
The two companies intend to take the partnership to the next level by removing safety drivers in the autonomous box trucks. The autonomous box trucks come with sensors and software that enable self-driving. Over the past year, the autonomous trucks have racked up 70,000 miles in autonomous mode, operating on a two-mile route between a ‘dark store’ and a Neighborhood market in Bentonville, Arkansas.
Buoyed by the results so far, Walmart and the Palo Alto-based Gatik intend to incorporate the trucks into actual deliveries in Arkansas. There are also plans to expand the autonomous delivery service into a second location in Louisiana. In Louisiana, the trucks will start delivering items from a Walmart Supercenter to a designated pick-up location where customers can retrieve their orders.
Enhancing Delivery
Walmart has embarked on an ambitious plan to strengthen its retail and delivery operations. Self-driving cars are seen as a perfect fit that should help enhance the delivery of items while keeping costs low. The retailer has already inked strategic partnerships with other companies also working on self-driving cars. In addition to Gatik, the company is also working with Waymo, Cruise, and Ford.
In addition to self-driving cars, Walmart has already started making deliveries using drones. The company has launched a small pilot program in North Carolina, whereby it is delivering select grocery and essential household items using automated drones.
Investments in self-driving cars and drones are part of Walmart's push to enhance its e-commerce operations. With shopping patterns shifting online, the company, just like other retailers, has had to enhance delivery services. Customers are increasingly turning to retail outlets that allow them to shop online and have items delivered at their doorstep.
