Quibi run as a short form streaming service is almost coming to an end. The streaming service is in talks to sell its content to Roku Inc. as it continues to wind down its operations. Under the terms of the agreement, Roku Inc. (NASDAQ:ROKU) is to acquire rights to Quibi’s library.
Quibi Sell-Off
Roku is opened to acquiring the content as it looks to bolster its catalog as it continues to push aggressively into content with the Roku app. Some of the content it is poised to gain access to include ten-minutes shows featuring stars such as Anna Kendrick Liam Hemsworth and Sophie Turner.
As Roku strengthens its content portfolio it’s a ferry-tale end for Quibi barely a year after taking the streaming sector by storm. Founded by movie mogul Jeffrey Katzenberg, the short film streaming service went on to raise $1.75 billion with an ambitious plan to develop high-end content for mobile phones.
Quibi’s Struggles
Since its inception, Quibi has struggled to gain traction among users. Stiff competition in the streaming of short videos is believed to be one of the factors that triggered its demise. For starters, the viral video app TikTok has been a big sensation in the COVID-19 era and a preferred app for streaming viral videos.
While Katzenberg has blamed the pandemic for Quibi’s misfortunes other people have cited the unusual format and lack of creative choice to keep people signed up for the service. Amid the misfortunes, Quibi was still able to scoop two Emmy Awards in the short-form video category with two of its shows scoring nominations.
Roku is now looking to profit from some of the Quibi award-winning material as it looks to revamp its Roku App. However, the streaming service still faces significant hurdles to access some of the content. Complicating the negotiations is the fact that Quibi did not own some of the content.
Quibi only bought exclusive rights to stream some of the shows for seven years. The arrangement worked best for content producers who will be able to resell their content after seven years once the contracts expire. It is still unclear how exclusive rights will affect Quibi Roku negotiations.
