NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA) has been in the spotlight for the past two or so weeks for all the right reasons. First, it was the launch of its latest generation of extremely powerful GPUs and now it has been announced that the company has secured a deal to acquire popular chipmaker, ARM Holdings which is based in the UK.
The GPU maker reportedly announced a deal for the acquisition ARM Holdings for $40 billion making it one of the biggest acquisitions this year. The tech giant’s CEO Jensen Huang revealed that the acquisition would help make the company a leader in the AI segment. He believes that the acquisition will help his company to develop an advanced AI facility that will focus on areas such as autonomous driving, robotics, health sciences, and healthcare among others.
Nvidia also stated that ARM will still continue to operate its headquarters in the UK despite the acquisition. This decision will allow the company to maintain its workforce in Europe. Analysts have expressed concern especially over the size of the deal especially as far as competition is concerned, but Nvidia is optimistic that it will manage to secure regulatory approval from the relevant authorities in different regions.
The acquisition will likely boost Nvidia’s lead in gaming hardware
Nvidia has been locked in a tight GPU battle with AMD which also makes GPUs but it has also been making waves in the chipset market with its Ryzen lineup of chips which have even been rivaling Intel. NVIDIA’s acquisition of ARM levels the playing field even more, which means that Nvidia will also compete more effectively with AMD in the SoC segment.
NVIDIA could potentially focus on making powerful CPUs through ARM so that it can tap into the gaming market more efficiently with an all-rounded offering. It also means that the company can potentially target other high-revenue areas such as the mobile market more effectively. The acquisition of ARM could thus turn out to be quite interesting for various industries and, more so for Nvidia moving forward. It will also provide strong synergies that will also play an important role in their roadmap.
