The battle of supremacy in the electric car space is heating up. While the focus has been on Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) for the longest time, Nio is also looking to cause a storm in the sector. The Chinese electric car maker has unveiled its first-ever electric sedan model.
Nio’s ET7
ET7 is the latest addition on the block, launched in the Western city of Chengdu. With the launch, the company is looking to get a greater share of the world’s largest car market. The electric sedan development was mostly advised by the fact that sedan’s and SUV’s account for a big share of China’s passenger market at around 46%.
The ET7 will come fitted with LiDAR sensors, which are mostly fitted in autonomous cars to enhance self-driving. Likewise, the ET7 will be able to perceive its surrounding. Likewise, ET7 comes with a new technology designed to give it a range of 1,000km on a single charge. However, it will cost a fortune by any standard.
The starting price for the electric sedan is $58 3789. The hefty price could be its biggest undoing as it does not include a battery pack, which is one of the most important and expensive components in electric cars. Amid the pricing concern’s Nio CEO William Li insists that ET7’s has what it takes to rival the BMW’s 5 Series and the Audi’s A6 as well as the Mercedes-Benz E-class sedans.
Tesla China Push
The unveiling of the ET7 EV comes hot on the heels of Tesla setting sights on the Chinese market. The Californian-based automaker has started selling its Model Y autonomous electric car. The car s made in Shanghai and will go on sale at a starting price of 339,000 Yuan.
Tesla is poised to be the Nio biggest competitor in the Chinese market, which presents tremendous opportunities in the sale of electric cars. The company sold 43,728 cars last year and boasted of a market capitalization of about $92 billion.
