Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is solidifying its presence in the gaming industry through the acquisition of ZeniMax Media, the company that owns the popular gaming studio, Bethesda.
The two companies agreed to a deal valued at $7.5 billion. The acquisition has been seen as a very strategic move on Microsoft's part especially since it was struck at the dawn of the new generation gaming consoles. The software and internet giant owns the Xbox gaming brand which produces Xbox consoles, game titles, and online subscriptions which generate money for the company.
Meanwhile, Bethesda is one of the most popular and successful game development studios. It boasts of impressive titles such as The Elder Scrolls and the Fallout series of immensely successful games. So it is clear that Bethesda really knows how to make attractive video games. This explains why Microsoft has acquired it, especially for such a hefty price.
What are the possible implications of the acquisition?
Such major acquisitions in the gaming industry have elicited mixed reactions in the past especially from the purist gaming community. Smaller game studios that manage to make really good games are believed to be in tune with what the gaming community wants. However, the involvement of major studios means the interests are no longer on what gamers want but rather what the corporate ownership believes is the best direction for revenue direction.
On the other hand, companies such as Microsoft now understand the need to focus on providing what gamers need if they want to achieve long-term growth and success in the segment. Microsoft's acquisition of Bethesda may also be good for the consumers/gamers. It will allow Bethesda to ramp up the production of more games, especially with Microsoft's strong financial backing.
All of Bethesda’s properties and its 2,300 employees will now belong to Microsoft. The acquisition will allow the two companies to double down on the production of gaming titles that are designed to take advantage of the power of the Xbox Series X. Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft stated that the gaming segment is one of the most expansive segments of the entertainment industry.
