Alphabet Inc Class A (NASDAQ:GOOGL) subsidiary Google faced a panel of senators on Tuesday to defend itself from claims that it has been monopolizing the digital advertising space.
The Senate held a meeting on Tuesday, during which they grilled Google for monopolizing the digital space. The senators particularly expressed concern over how Google has been using its services such as YouTube and Gmail among others to gain more control over the advertising industry. The senators believe that the advertising giant has been using these tactics to ensure that it becomes a monopoly in the advertising industry.
The Justice Department is investigating Google and there is a likelihood that an antitrust lawsuit might be filed against the company. Google’s president of corporate development and global partnerships, Donald Harrison. defended the company by stating that there are other choices that advertisers and publishers can choose from other than Google. He also noted that the cost of digital advertising has gone down over the past few years, indicating that there is strong competition.
Do the antitrust accusations really highlight Google’s policy and how it affects users?
It is no coincidence that Google is facing antitrust accusations and it is not the only major company to be subjected to this. Facebook has also been at the center of such controversy and the common argument is that these companies are violating user rights such as privacy of data. Unfortunately, people often agree to have their data used for things like ad targeting when they accept the terms and conditions.
Tuesday’s senate meeting focused on whether Google has been using its advantageous position to suppress the competition. The company, together with Amazon, Apple, and Facebook were also in another meeting in July this year, during which they defended themselves against claims that the power has shifted to a few companies. The antitrust concerns aim to prevent major corporations from becoming too powerful that they start abusing that power to not only hurt users but also their rivals.
