General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) transition into electric cars is gaining traction. The company has confirmed plans to transform its Spring Hill Tennessee plant that currently develops gasoline-powered Cadillac SUVs into an electric car plant.
GM $2 Billion Investment
The auto giant has already allocated $2 billion that will be used to equip the plant with all the necessary tools for the development of the new Cadillac Lyriq electric SUV. The transformation will bring to three the total number of GM's plants dedicated to developing electric cars.
Unveiled last year, Cadillac Lyriq is General Motors answer to the growing demand for electric cars as focus shifts from gasoline-powered cars. The electric car is poised to go to mass production in late 2022.
The auto giant has also confirmed a $3.5 million investment in the Orion assembly plant in Michigan. The investment comes on the company's heels promising a $300 million investment in the plant, which currently makes the Chevrolet Bolt EV. The plant is also being retooled to make another Chevrolet model in the future.
Focus On Electric Cars
The investment comes when the company is increasingly investing in the U.S in line with President Donald Trump's push to make everything in the U.S. The investment also underscores General Motors' ambitions to become a big player in the electric car space that has until now been Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA)’s domain.
The company has already renamed the Detroit Hamtramck factory 'Factory-Zero'. Backed by an investment of $2.2 billion, the plant is poised to employ some 2,200 workers, hundred more than in recent years. The Detroit Hamtramck plant will also be at the heart of General Motors' electric car ambitions. The plant should start building the GMC Hummer EV electric car late next year.
General Motors' investment does not surprise as the auto industry is experiencing its biggest transformation amid calls for a reduction in car emissions. Companies are increasingly coming up with electric cars fitted with autonomous features in response to growing demand.
