Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) is yet again under regulatory scrutiny over what authorities claim to be complacency in the labeling of some products. The Food and Drug Administration has taken the retail giant’s unit, Whole Foods Market, to task, for failing to label products for the presence of food allergens.
FDA Warning
Whole Foods Market has already been hit with a warning letter for failing to label items properly. The warning letter comes on the grocery chain recalling more than 30 food products over the presence of major food allergens not listed in product labels. Most of the affected products were sold under the Whole Foods brand found under the deli and bakery sections.
In the letter, the FDA alleges the discovery of a pattern of receiving and offering for sale misbranded food products by Whole Food’s Market. Likewise, the agency alleges the discovery of a pattern of numerous recalls for undeclared allergens.
In the letter, the FDA reiterates the grocery chain has a responsibility of investigating and determining causes of violations. Likewise it should strive to prevent their recurrence. Similarly, the FDA wants the Amazon unit to respond within 15-daysfrom the receipt of the letter and detail the actions it is taking to address the violations.
Whole Foods Response
Whole Foods Market becomes the first retail chain to come under scrutiny from the FDA for engaging in a pattern of receiving and offering the sale of misbranded items. The retail chain faces strict FDA enforcement action for failing to correct the violations.
The Amazon unit has already responded to the FDA letter reiterating that it takes food safety very seriously. The company also says it is working closely with the agency to ensure all practices and procedure in stores meet and exceed set out safety requirements.
Amazon bought Whole Foods Market in 2017 as it sought to expand its footprint into the business of distributing groceries. The acquisition has accorded the e-commerce giant access to lots of shopping data, highly needed to expand and strengthen the online grocery business and private label offerings.
