Facebook, Inc. (NASDAQ:FB) has upped monitoring of posts in the run-up to the hotly contested U.S presidential election. The networking giant has confirmed that it has rejected close to 2.2 million ads across Facebook and Instagram. Most of the ads obstructed were reportedly designed to ‘obstruct’ voting in the upcoming elections.
Facebook Crackdown
The networking giant has also confirmed the withdrawal of close to 120,000 posts. It has also placed warnings on more than 150 million posts as part of its crackdown on false or misleading information designed to sway voters.
According to Nick Clegg, the vice president for global affairs, the networking giant relies on artificial intelligence to detect and pull down posts of fake accounts. Unlike in the past, when the tech giant relied on other user's posts to pull down posts, it relied on its internal monitoring systems. The company has also partnered with 70 media outlets as part of its crackdown on misleading information.
The crackdown comes on the heels of the networking giant coming under immense scrutiny in the aftermath of the 2016 presidential elections. The company was accused of doing little to crack down on false and misleading information that ended up interfering with the outcome of the election.
Facebook Election Ads Warning
In response, Facebook ended up introducing a fact-checking program that was added up to Instagram last year. The program has helped in cracking down on misleading information Facebook groups. In addition to the crackdown, Facebook has also altered its algorithm in a bid to appease conservatives. Changes to the algorithm have seen a reduction in the visibility of content from left-leaning sites.
Ahead of the November 3 election, Facebook has confirmed that it will ban any ads that wrongly claim victory before the official tally. The company is also to ban any advertisements that claim rampant voter fraud could alter the outcome of the election. The Platform will also not air any ads a week before the election or ads from Donald Trump or Joe Biden that claim a win prematurely.
