Facebook Inc. (NASDAQ:FB) will no longer accept posts related to the conspiracy movement QAnon after classifying it as a dangerous group that poses a significant danger. The networking giant has already started removing all Facebook groups and pages as well as Instagram accounts tied to the conspiracy movement.
Facebook Ban
The networking giant has already removed over 1,500 pages and groups tied to QAnon, most of which held discussions with the potential of fuelling violence ahead of the hotly contested presidential elections. Facebook has also struck out over 6,500 pages tied to more than 3000 militarized social movements.
Facebook says it is removing all pages tied to the group given that calls for violence have the potential to cause real-world harm. The company has also raised concerns over the way QAnon messaging changes quickly, with the audience pivoting from one message to another quickly.
One conspiracy theory propagated by the conspiracy group is that a cabal of satanic worshiping pedophiles running a global child sex trafficking ring is plotting against President Donald Trump. Some adherents have also reiterated the strong belief that leftist politicians and celebrities eat children.
The company’s Dangerous Organizations Operations team works around the clock to detect any harmful content before users report them. The team is reportedly able to accurately identify posts such as those belonging to QAnon content by sifting through user reports.
Facebook Policy Change
However, Facebook insists it is not banning individual posts on the network but accounts that act as platforms for spreading conspiracy theories that have the potential to fuel fear and violence. The updated policy on what can be shared on the social networking app is part of an effort to ensure free and fair elections that are devoid of any interference.
Facebook has already confirmed it will not air any political ads one week to the elections. It has also confirmed that it will block posts and accounts that claim victory of a potential candidate before the official figures are issued.
