Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL), Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN), Facebook Inc. (NASADQ: FB), and Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOGL) face a long way in defending themselves against anti-competitive behavior. A new Democratic congressional staff report has recommended significant changes to anti-trust laws that will help curtail the amount of power that the companies wield in their respective fields of operations.
Antitrust Law Changes
The report calls for major changes in how big tech companies operate. For instance, it calls for a spinoff or separation of vital parts into standalone businesses. It also calls for tightening rules that would make it difficult for big companies to acquire small companies to stifle competition or strengthen their competitive edge.
The 450-page report also calls for tightening laws that would prevent tech giants from referencing their user services. Instead, they should be made to offer equal terms on all products and services. The Democrat staff report also calls for anti-trust agencies to block dominant platforms' mergers until it is proven such mergers won't hurt competition.
The report also calls for dominant firms to make their services compatible with competitors' platforms and enable free transfer of data. The Federal Trade Commission should also be allowed to collect data on concentration regularly.
Potential Impact
If implemented, Google may be forced to divest and separate from YouTube, a video sharing platform that wields too much power in the video-sharing business. Facebook, on its part, could be forced to divest WhatsApp and Instagram, two popular social networking apps that boast millions of users.
On its part, Apple could be forced to open up its highly protected iOS ecosystem to free transfer of data across other platforms. The company also enjoys a monopoly on software app distribution on devices. The company has also been accused of enforcing and creating barriers to competition.
The tech giants can heave a sigh of relief as Republicans have voiced their objections to some of the recommendations in the report. For instance, a good number of conservative legislators are opposed to the imposition of structural separations.
