Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) dominance of the e-commerce business can be attributed to, among other things, the automation of its warehouse. Robots have taken up a good chunk of operations in most warehouses, thereby enhancing efficiency and the sorting of items.
Fulfillment Centers Injuries
Amid the improvements brought about by automation, a new report by the Center for Investigative Reporting has cast doubts on safety standards in the fulfillment centers. The rate at which employees sustain injuries while working hand in hand with the robots is alarming.
According to the report, between 2016 and 2019, employees working in highly automated centers sustained serious injuries compared to employees working at places with no robots. For instance, a fulfillment center south of the company’s headquarters in Seattle registered 22 serious injuries for every 100 workers. This is five times more than the current industry standard.
It was also found that injuries in warehouses are rampant during the holiday season, given the increased shopping spree on the e-commerce platform. Likewise, employees are usually under pressure to ensure items are processed and delivered within a day as part of the Amazon Prime program. In 2019 alone, Amazon recorded 14,000 serious injury cases at 150 fulfillment centers.
One of the biggest factors behind the high rate of serious injuries at automated warehouses is the unrealistic expectations of the humans who work side by side the robots. With robots' help, human pickers in the warehouse are expected to scan 400 products an hour, unlike in the past where they could scan a minimum of 100 items.
Amazon Stance
Amazon has been reluctant to change the way employees work to minimize the high rate of injuries despite the Occupational Safety and Health Administration outlining a number of policies. For instance, the company was asked to rotate employees between different jobs through the shift.
Amazon has refuted the safety concerns reiterating that robotics, automation, and technology in fulfillment centers enhance the workplace environment. The tech giant also insists that automation has only made jobs safer and more efficient.
