Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) is thinking of ways in which it can achieve more efficiency in delivery and fulfillment and the latest plan involves creating warehouses in suburban areas.
The e-commerce giant recently revealed that it will open roughly 1,000 warehouses that will be strategically be located in suburban neighborhoods. The move is part of the company's strategy to achieve faster and more convenient deliveries, allowing it to make eCommerce through its online platform more appealing. The decision is also based on the fact that eCommerce is becoming more popular, which means that there is a need to adjust its services to keep up with the increasing demand.
Adjusting to the challenges presented by the coronavirus pandemic
The decision to open warehouses might also be part of Amazon’s strategy to adapt to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. Like many other companies, Amazon’s operations were affected by the coronavirus pandemic earlier this year. So much that it could not achieve the two-day delivery it has been promising to its customers. This was partly due to the increase in online buying as people avoided the outdoors.
The e-commerce giant hired 175,000 new employees to help overcome the delivery shortfall. The company expects e-commerce to continue growing in the next few years, thus the need to be properly prepared to handle that growth. The growth expectations make a strong case for Amazon’s performance in the future and also for customers as far as rapid delivery is concerned.
There will also be other additional benefits to the decision to create warehouses within U.S neighborhoods. For example, the construction process will create jobs and so will the warehouses once they are completed, since there will be the need to have workers at those warehouses. Amazon's CEO Jeff Bezos also stated that in addition to spending millions to create the warehouses, they will also significantly increase the number of delivery vans. The heavy investment will thus benefit society through job creation.
