Facebook Inc. (NASDAQ:FB) ramps up its crackdown days after banning President Donald Trump from the platform. The social networking giant says it will no longer allow ads for weapon accessories and protective equipment heading into President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration on January 20th.
Ban on gun Accessories
Some of the ads banned are those for gun safes as well as vests and gun holsters. This is in addition to a ban on ads for weapons, ammunition, and weapon enhancement like silencers that was already in place. The ban on gun accessories comes amid growing concerns about the possibility of more violence ahead of the January 20th inauguration.
Facebook has also confirmed it will remove all content on Instagram and Facebook with the phrase stop the steal. Trump supporters have mostly used the phrase to fuel baseless claims about voter fraud that triggered Capitol Hill Insurrection.
Mounting Pressure
The ban on gun accessories comes on the social networking giant coming under pressure for running ads for military equipment next to content promoting election misinformation. It also comes on the heels of three U.S senators requesting Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg to consider a permanent ban on ads of products that can be used in arms combat.
According to the senators, this is the only way the social networking giant can hold itself accountable for how bad actors have used the platform over the years to further their illicit aims.
Facebook has always found itself at crossroads over the way people use the platform to enhance illegal activities, fuel the propagation of misinformation as well as its privacy policies. The tech giant had initially come under scrutiny for failing to effectively police disinformation and violent content on its networking app.
During the insurrection at Capitol Hills, some protesters used the platform to live stream the attack. Following criticism, the tech giant has confirmed it will not allow the streaming of any new content in close proximity to places such as the White House and the U.S Capitol.
